SoCreate Screenwriting Software’s Weekly Writing Challenge – Prompt 15

Engaging in SoCreate's Weekly Creative Exercises can be an ideal way to stimulate your creativity and conquer writer's block in a short amount of time.

This week's exercise invites you to delve into a dramatic scene set in a prison visiting room. The characters, Rhett, Laura, and Lucy, are caught in an emotional farewell. Rhett, on the wrong side of the prison wall, is unaware that this is the last time Laura and Lucy will visit him. How do they say goodbye without revealing their true intentions?

  • Location: INT – Prison Visiting Room – Day

  • Characters: Rhett; Laura; Lucy

  • Scene Description: Rhett (40) is hunched over the phone behind the glass, on the wrong side of the prison wall where he’s been for two years. The nearby correctional officer gives Laura (40) and their daughter Lucy (12) a five-minute warning.

  • Prompt: With only a few minutes left in their visit, Laura and Lucy must bid farewell to Lucy’s father, Rhett. But this isn't going to be like their usual Sunday visits when they say “goodbye and see you next week.” Craft a scene where Laura and Lucy say goodbye to Rhett for the final time, without him realizing they won't be returning.

Extra Credit: Use a flashback in this scene! To add a flashback, navigate to the Tools Toolbar on the right-hand side of your screen. Click "Add Transition," then choose "Story Transition." Select "Begin Flashback" and SoCreate will insert a line into your Story Stream wherever you left your Focus Indicator. You can drag & drop this Flashback line wherever you see fit. Write your flashback, then repeat the process to add a line for "End Flashback." When you preview your script in the traditional screenplay format, your flashback will be formatted as the industry expects.
