- What first inspired you to start screenwriting, and how has your journey evolved over time?
I've always been a writer at heart, but an article I read last year about Ryan Coogler's wife buying him his first screenwriting software when he couldn't afford it deeply inspired me to begin my own screenwriting journey. Since then, my approach to screenwriting has evolved significantly. I'm now more determined than ever to continue writing, driven by the firm belief that my story will one day reach the big screen.
- What project are you currently working on? What excites you most about it?
I'm currently working on a screenplay about my life, as well as my upcoming book titled "Rant," which is set to be released on July 4th, 2025. What excites me most about these projects is that they are both rooted deeply in my own personal experiences. Instead of creating fictional characters to craft a narrative, I'm drawing directly from the authentic events and emotions of my real life.
- Do you have a favorite story you've written, why?
At the moment, I can't say for certain that I have a favorite story I've written. There are so many narratives still waiting in my head and heart that haven't yet been shared with the public. Ask me again next year, and I'll likely have a definitive answer for you!
- Has SoCreate shaped the way you write?
SoCreate has significantly shaped the way I approach writing. The software is incredibly user-friendly, allowing me to effortlessly create characters tailored specifically for each script. I appreciate the ability to add locations, actions, and even specify tones of voice. Most of all, I love that it automatically formats my script into the industry-standard screenplay format.
- Do you have any specific routines, rituals, or habits that help you stay creative?
I wouldn't say I have any specific routines, rituals, or habits that consistently help me stay creative. However, whenever an idea strikes, I immediately write it down or save it in the notes on my phone to ensure I don't forget. Additionally, conversations with my wife often spark memories and provide fresh inspiration for my writing.
- What does your typical writing process look like, from concept to final draft?
My typical writing process, from concept to final draft, involves spending hours—and sometimes days—alone in my room, diving deep into my thoughts and getting them down on paper or into my laptop. Often, my thoughts move faster than I can write or type. One thing that's essential for me is having the TV on in the background; I can't write in complete silence. I also make sure to take breaks in between writing sessions to avoid burning out and to keep my mind fresh.
- How do you handle writer’s block or moments when inspiration is hard to find?
When I encounter writer's block or moments when inspiration is hard to find, I put everything away completely. I might watch a show, grab something to eat, or take a nap to help reset my mind and get that fresh brain working again. I also talk to my wife about it—she always encourages me to step away and not force it until I'm ready to come back naturally. Interestingly, it's often something completely unrelated to what I'm writing that sparks new ideas or re-energizes me. For example, simply eating a dipped ice cream cone might trigger a new thought and get me back into writing mode.
- What has been the most challenging part of your writing journey, and how did you overcome it?
The most challenging part of my writing journey has been sticking to it and ensuring that my work is long enough—at minimum—to fit the format of a short TV show. I overcame this challenge by focusing on simply writing down everything I have first. If there are any gaps afterward, I trust that they can be easily filled in during the editing and revision process.
- What do you love about SoCreate?
I love SoCreate because it gives individuals like myself—and so many others—the opportunity to bring our thoughts and life experiences to life through their software. It allows us to showcase our stories at a higher level of writing. Through SoCreate, we've gained fans, support, and the hope of eventually having our scripts brought to the big screen.
- Have you received any awards or accolades for your screenwriting?
I have not published any of my screenwriting work yet, so I haven’t received any awards or accolades at this point. However, I’m continuing to write and grow, and I’m excited about the possibilities that lie ahead as I share more of my work.
- Is there a specific milestone in your screenwriting career that you’re particularly proud of?
A specific milestone I'm proud of in my screenwriting journey was acquiring the SoCreate software and finally starting to work on my screenplay. I'm proud that I didn’t let more years pass me by without taking action—committing to this step was a major turning point for me.
- What is your ultimate goal as a screenwriter?
My ultimate goal as a screenwriter is to become a heavy hitter filmmaker and producer—on the level of Ryan Coogler, 50 Cent, Tyler Perry, and others who have made a significant impact in the industry. I want to tell powerful stories that resonate, inspire, and leave a lasting legacy.
- What advice would you give to other screenwriters looking to connect with a platform or community like SoCreate?
The advice I would give to other screenwriters looking to connect with a platform or community like SoCreate is simple: don't wait—go for it! The software is incredibly user-friendly, and there's actual support available if you ever need help. It's a growing, thriving community filled with opportunity, encouragement, and resources for writers at every level.
- What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received, and how has it shaped your work?
The best piece of writing advice I’ve ever received is: "Everyone has a story to tell, but if you don’t write it, who will ever know about it?" That wisdom has shaped my work in a powerful way. It reminded me that my story—and the stories I carry—could resonate deeply with someone who has gone through, or is going through, the same experiences. Writing gives those stories a voice and the power to connect, heal, and inspire.
- Can you share a little about how you grew up and where you came from?
I grew up in a single-mother household after my mom made the brave decision to leave her abusive husband. From a young age, I stepped into a caretaker role, helping her raise my two younger siblings. Right after high school, I enlisted in the military, looking for structure and purpose. But life had other plans. My journey has been anything but linear—a roller coaster of pain, resilience, and unexpected turns. It’s this lived experience that fuels my storytelling and makes every word I write come from a place of raw, unfiltered truth.
- How has your personal background or experience influenced the kinds of stories you tell?
My personal background and experiences have absolutely shaped the stories I tell. I firmly believe that lived experiences are the best teachers. Without the path I’ve walked—through both hardship and growth—I wouldn’t be able to tell stories rooted in raw and unfiltered truth. It’s those real-life moments that bring depth and authenticity to my writing.
Thank you, Pink, for being this week’s SoCreate member spotlight! We’re honored to celebrate your creative journey with the SoCreate community.
