SoCreate member and screenwriter, Jonny White, has created a system that keeps his creativity flowing and his story ideas organized. Using SoCreate’s Outline Feature, he manages hundreds of pages of notes by dropping them into the appropriate act, sequence, or scene, and he now keeps his Outline Stream open beside his Story Stream. This allows him to pull the right details into each scene without getting lost in the clutter.
“It’s less infuriating than trying to look at a hundred pages of notes every time you write a scene,” Jonny shared.
Before SoCreate, Jonny relied on physical note cards pinned to a magnet board. He loves that the Outline Feature feels familiar but offers the flexibility of a digital workspace. He can drag, rearrange, and visualize his structure just like before, only now, it’s all in one place and easy to take anywhere.
“Having the two, the Story Stream and the Outline Stream, in parallel makes it a bit more intuitive to understand that you’re trying to take your notes from one and dramatize them in the other,” he explained.
Jonny also uses the Outline Stream as a guide for character and story progression. Even simple notes about where a character starts and ends in a scene help him stay focused.
When it comes to writing itself, SoCreate has transformed his process. “I open it, and after a couple of hours, a scene has been written. That has not been true of other ways I’ve tried to write,” he said.
Jonny shared that SoCreate’s user interface helps him get into the writing zone by creating an environment that feels purpose-built for screenwriting, keeping distractions out of the way.
He’s also impressed by how quickly SoCreate evolves based on writer feedback. “It’s been satisfying to send a note and see it fixed six hours later,” he said, encouraging other writers to share their feedback too.
Jonny’s background reflects his deep curiosity about storytelling. During his Ph.D. in psychology, he once interviewed acclaimed fiction writers to understand how they create, and he now leads a team at xAI, teaching Elon Musk’s large language model to create. Still, he continues to write and explore the intersection of storytelling and technology, open to opportunities in both.
He was first inspired to start writing 25 years ago, when his imagination would spontaneously create scenes in his mind, and he wondered if others might enjoy those scenes as much as he did. He’s currently working on an action comedy about two siblings who fake an alien portal in an attempt to unify humanity.
