SoCreate Screenwriting Software’s Weekly Writing Challenge – Prompt 22

This week's exercise takes us into a classroom with characters Astrid and Chance. Astrid is lost in her daydreams, oblivious to the ongoing class, while Chance observes her from two rows back.

Writing Challenge

  • Location: INT – Classroom – Day

  • Characters: Astrid; Chance

  • Scene Description: Astrid (12) taps her pencil on her desk, eyes to the sky, oblivious to what her teacher is saying to the class. She glances forward and daydreams about the cute boy sitting two rows ahead of her. Chance (12) sits behind her two rows back and looks at her oddly.

  • Prompt: Write a scene where Astrid thinks to herself, “Good thing no one can hear my thoughts,” but then Chance responds. He can hear her! And he can speak to her! How does the conversation, happening completely telepathically, proceed before their teacher realizes something is up?

Extra Credit: Try changing Action Duration in one of your Action Stream Items! SoCreate automatically calculates how long your screenplay will take up in screen time. You can check this stat at any time by clicking the chart icon in your Title Card. However, you can manually adjust the amount of time something will take on screen. For example, if you need to describe a scene in more detail than usual, but you know this extra description won't add screen time, change the timing manually by clicking the clock icon within an Action Stream Item. Here, you can dictate how long that piece of action should take on screen. Where SoCreate might calculate 15 seconds, you can update the timing to 5 seconds.
