Need to Get Away? Use This Screenwriting Event as a Very Good Excuse

This one’s for our worn-out writer friends, and especially those of you who live within driving distance to the Central Coast of California! Here’s a chance to recharge your batteries AND learn a ton from professional screenwriters. It’s almost time for the Central Coast Writer’s Conference.

Registration is now open for this three-day event, September 26-28, 2019 in beautiful San Luis Obispo. We’re biased, A) because we live here and B) because we’re big backers of this conference, but you can trust our good taste. If you’re a writer of ANY KIND, this is not an event you want to miss. It’s been named “Best Writers Conference in the West” for good reason.

Author Jonathan Maberry, Editor Jeanne V. Bowerman, and Screenwriter Doug Richardson sit in director's chairs

Hewitt (Howl’s Moving Castle, Spirited Away, Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind), Monica Piper (Rugrats, Mad About You) and Linda Aronson (Dear Alice, Something in the Air, G.P.)

  • Why Movies Matter, and Why You Should Write One, by panelists Danny Manus, Linda Aronson, Doug Richardson, and Jeanne Veillette Bowerman

In addition, there are workshops for novelists, poets, beginners, experts, teens, and everything in between.

Whew! These incredible classes will make for three packed days of learning, making friends, and having fun. And it doesn’t hurt that you’ll be here in the city named the “Happiest Place on Earth” (no really, Oprah said it herself). You’ll be 10 minutes from the coast, surrounded by beautiful hiking, wine country in all directions, and plenty of mouth-watering food to fuel your furiously typing fingers.

Will you attend? Let me know on Twitter at @SoCreate, and maybe we can arrange a meetup at SoCreate’s headquarters! We hope we’ll see you this fall.

SLO International Film Fest Brings in Big Talent in 2019

Movies Matter! For 25 years, the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival has been singing that tune, and 2019 will be no different. For the fest’s silver celebration, organizers are bringing in films that address politics, environment, women’s rights, and more. “We aren’t saving the world,” said Executive Director Wendy Lewis, “but we are definitely impacting the way audiences see the world.” And that sentiment is what keeps SoCreate going back year after year, as both sponsor and guest of SLOIFF. This year, we’re thrilled to set up shop with cameras, lights, and director chairs at the SLOIFF headquarters...
Screenwriter Panel: Screenwriting Agents Want You!

Screenwriters Panel: Screenwriting Agents Want You!

SoCreate sat down with a panel of respected screenwriters at the Central Coast Writers’ Conference to discuss agents: how does a screenwriter get one? Weighing in on the topic – shown in the video below – is screenwriter Peter Dunne (CSI, Melrose Place, Nowhere Man, Sybil), Doug Richardson (Die Hard 2, Hostage, Money Train, Bad Boys), and Tom Schulman (Dead Poets Society, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Welcome to Mooseport, What About Bob). We were thrilled to get access to these accomplished writers to extract knowledge from their years of industry experience. Peter Dunne...
SoCreate Solo a Star Wars Story team

SoCreate Movie Day! Solo - A Star Wars Story

What a fun way to cap off our week! Last Friday, our team took a trip to the Downtown Centre Cinema in San Luis Obispo to watch the newest addition to the intergalactic film franchise—Solo: A Star Wars Story. Our team arrived at the theater just after 8:30 am geared up for a fun time outside of the office. We were all shocked to know that theaters even played movies that early in the day! Perhaps for Star Wars, they were willing to make a special exception. After waiting patiently in the courtyard for the theater to open, it was show time (literally!) We filed into the theater and found our seats...
