Just over a week ago, the ladies of SoCreate (and our CEO and Founder, Justin Couto) had the opportunity to attend Softec’s 4th Annual Women in Technology Dinner.
Softec is our Central Coast’s very own software and technology association. Their organization, which has been around for over 20 years, sponsors technology-themed networking and educational events for their 2,000+ members and the San Luis Obispo community.
This year’s event, which took place on Wednesday, April 18, centered around the importance of diversity in the workplace.
The event opened with an hour of networking and appetizers. Our team had the chance to talk with other local women that work in the technology space in San Luis Obispo, while also enjoying some tasty snacks from local restaurant, Splash Café.
Once the opening social hour was over, we all took a seat to listen to the evening’s presentations by keynote speakers:
- Denise Isom
Chair of the Ethnic Studies Department and Associate Faculty Director in the Office of University Diversity and Inclusion, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
- Amaya Weddle
Director of Research and Insights, MINDBODY
- Brittany McCrigler
Director of Education Services, iFixit
While each presenter shared their own unique take on the importance of diversity in the workplace, the underlying message for all 3 presentations was the same:
Diverse teams are the strongest teams!
It is not uncommon for companies to mistakenly underestimate the importance of having a diverse workforce. Diversity in the workplace provides us with the opportunity to think in new ways, experience greater levels of innovation and creativity, and hold a better understanding for the world around us.
This event's message was also a great reminder about the important role that diversity plays in the screenwriting world, as well. From our company's inception, it has been a top priority for us to provide a platform that welcomes a wide variety of stories and voices. We look forward to SoCreate opening the door to more diverse writer voices. By removing some of the barriers to entry imposed by other screenwriting software, we have the opportunity to give EVERY writer the chance and platform to share their unique story.
We all had a fantastic time listening to each of the speakers share their own experiences and struggles they’ve faced in their own roles, and we absolutely cannot wait to see what the 2019 Women in Technology Dinner has in store for us all.
Until next time,
