Experience Abounds: Veteran Video Editor Doug Slocum Joins SoCreate’s Outreach Team

We’re growing our Outreach Team with the addition of Doug Slocum! That means more great content for you, writers.

Doug Slocum

Doug will help us create video content from screenwriter and industry professional interviews, to support you and help you along through the screenplay process. And he knows plenty about storytelling; Doug has worked with some of the biggest names in the business! I feel so lucky that he made his way to San Luis Obispo, and now SoCreate.

Doug started his career in New York City working on TV commercials but moved to LA to pursue a career in feature films. Since then, he’s worked on “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow,” “Good Fences” and “Lovelace.” He also has many TV shows under his belt, admitting that the struggle of a video editor sometimes parallels that of a screenwriter. Timing is everything!

“I worked on one pilot as an assistant editor for David E. Kelley, and it was picked up by CBS,” Doug explained. “It was canceled after five episodes, because it was on Wednesday nights at 10 p.m., and that time slot was a graveyard for TV shows until 'CSI: NY.'”

Later, he was an assistant editor on “The Beverly Hills Cop,” directed by Barry Sonnenfeld (“Men in Black) and written by Shawn Ryan (“The Shield”), but it was never picked up. He also worked on the HBO series “John from Cincinnati” with David Milch (“Deadwood”). “But that series has the misfortune of premiering 120 seconds after the infamous “The Sopranos” series finale, you know the scene in the diner where “Don’t Stop Believing” was playing over the jukebox, and 80% of the viewing audience stopped watching HBO after that ending to figure out what just happened,” he recalled. “It was a disastrous lead-in.”

Luckily, Doug later found success as the assistant editor on “The Starter Wife” with Debra Messing, “Eureka” for the Sci-Fi Channel, and the final season of “Las Vegas.” He also edited several indie features.

Doug recently returned to the Central Coast for a more relaxed pace away from the hustle and bustle of Hollywood.

“I enjoy the Central Coast for its proximity to the Pacific Ocean. I'm hoping to go scuba diving soon when I have the time,” he said.

Although he added, time is slim when you’re raising two young kids!

Doug joined SoCreate because he felt like it would be exciting to be on the ground floor of a new endeavor.

“This is the first time I've ever worked for a start-up company,” he said. “I would equate the experience to working on a TV pilot or a first-year episodic television series that's trying to get off the ground.”

Doug is a major movie buff. We’ve yet to stump him on any film or TV trivia. But I did throw him a bit of a curveball when I asked him to name his favorite movie quote. He said it changes depending on the day of the week.

On this day, keeping our startup status in mind, I thought his quote choice was apropos.

I’m going to have to turn this opportunity down.

Don

No, you are going to have to turn this opportunity yes!

I think we’ll be learning a lot from Doug,

Darryl Yeo joins SoCreate

Bright and Early: Darryl Yeo Joins SoCreate's Software Engineering Team

To say Darryl Yeo is a high-achiever is an understatement. As a Cal Poly University freshman, Darryl is the youngest member of our software engineering team. However, what our newest intern lacks in years on earth, he makes up for through his dedicated, industrious approach to learn-by-doing. “I was hooked into computer programming when I was introduced to Scratch in 5th grade,” Darryl said. Scratch, a project of the MIT Media Lab, allows users to program their own interactive stories, games, and animation. “I am very project driven and learn best when I can make something as I go.”

Duncan Gichimu Joins a Team of Lifelong Learners at SoCreate

SoCreate continues to grow our team of software engineering talent with the recent addition of Duncan Gichimu. Duncan was a standout graduate of the Fullstack Academy coding boot camp, where he honed skills he’s been building since high school. And SoCreate couldn’t help but take notice! The Fullstack program is competitive and intense, but Duncan is no stranger to these two adjectives. He’s been coding since he was a teenager and won 3 national championships with his BDPA (Black Data Processing Associates) chapter, all before he graduated high school. After studying mathematics and...

Courtney’s background spans journalism, performing arts, marketing, and public relations, making her uniquely qualified to tell SoCreate’s story. Courtney’s love of writing started in a Paso Robles High School journalism classroom, where she quickly rose to editor-in-chief of the Crimson...
